Overview

The Charles Street Development Corporation (CSDC) has undertaken a study to assess the potential for a streetcar line connecting the Inner Harbor to University Parkway in Charles Village. The CSDC leadership and consultant team have worked since 2004 with a group of city, transit, business, neighborhood and institutional representatives to identify benefits of trolley service and to establish a route along a 3.5 mile north-south corridor. Both fixed rail and rubber-tire trolley alternatives are being investigated.

Drawing from experiences in national and international cities, the streetcar is expected to enhance livability, connect destinations, and boost business and development activity along the route. The project is gaining momentum within Baltimore City as an opportunity to link numerous neighborhoods, cultural destinations, educational institutions, and business districts with high quality reliable transit in the corridor. Future work on the study will involve a detailed engineering and operations analysis, development of a financing strategy, and development of management and operational alternatives.
